Sudan
Human Appeal International have been working in Sudan since 1991 when the country was in the grip of a terrible civil war (1983-2005) in which 2 million people died and 4 million Sudanese were displaced. Our work has expanded across the country in 3 large field offices based in the cities of Khartoum Kassala and Nyala.
Human Appeal have been working actively in the Darfur region due to the ongoing internal conflict. We took immediate action by establishing a regional office in Nyala the capital of South Darfur; hence we were well placed in the region to deliver emergency aid to the devastated population of Darfur.
Human Appeal in Sudan
In Galdy village in Darfur we’ve set up an emergency field hospital serving a wider community of about 16 000 people. The hospital is vital in providing basic medical care costing £3 850 per month. Three government hospitals were refurbished and renovated by HAI in Kass Nyala and Al-Junayna. These hospitals are essential in helping malnourished children and providing medical aid for the affected population.
The total cost for the three hospitals was £45 000. The majority of the communities who were forced to flee their homes and land are farmers. These farming communities have been stripped from their land with no opportunity to plant and grow their annual crops. Unfortunately they will have to rely on handouts from aid agencies. Initially HAI provided food for 300 families in Galdy village.
The families receive essential food items such as: flour corn peas rice oil tea and sugar continuously for six months. Following this HAI started an income-generating project for 198 families. We purchased donkeys pesticides seeds and tools for agriculture. This was given to families who eventually returned to their lands and began farming. After 6 months the crops were sold in the market which has allowed the families to take control of their future and begin to rebuild their lives through feeding themselves and selling their crops in the market.
