Bosnia and Herzegovina

The years of conflict and ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) completely destroyed Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnians suffered genocide torture and mass rapes at the hands of Serbian forces for 3 years before NATO intervened. Over 110 000 people were killed including the notorious Srebrenica massacre – the largest genocide in Europe since the Second World War - where 8 373 Bosnian males were brutally murdered simply for being Muslims. The economy is still suffering greatly. A quarter of the population are now living in poverty and half the population are unemployed.

Human Appeal In Bosnia

Human Appeal International have been working in Bosnia since the outbreak of war in 1992. Our main office is based in Tuzla with a field office in Sarajevo. We remain committed to working in Bosnia well after the world’s media attention has diverted to another international disaster. Human Appeal have built houses for the widows and orphans of the Srebrenica genocide and we help them as much as we can. We have a comprehensive orphan and widow sponsorship programme which supports and protects these victims through life. With our Micro Credit scheme we continue to improve people’s lives through a regular source of income. Many families in Bosnia and Herzegovina are struggling to survive because of the lack of employment and the opportunity to earn a living. Unemployment is close to 50%! We are regularly providing cows and sewing machines to help the local economy. We also run occupational-training programmes allowing many families the opportunity to break out of the vicious poverty in Bosnia. Human Appeal International provides continuous annual projects such as Qurbani Ramadan Food Parcels and Feed the Fasting Iftars which are essential for deprived families who live in the most abject poverty in all of Europe. Deprived communities wait eagerly for these special times of the year to enjoy the vital aid distributed through our programmes.
